Summary Darfur is the northeastern part of Sudan. Its population is approximately 6 million. This population is mainly consisting of Fur, Massalit and Zaghawa tribes of African descent. On the other hand, nomadic and half-nomadic peoples of Darfur are mainly Arabs and live in the dry northern part of Darfur. Struggle for the limited resources between the Arabic and African Darfurians scaled up in 1970s and 1980s due to drought and desertification. In 1980s and 1990s, government of Sudan and government-backed militias started targeting civilians. As a result, Darfurians became polarized according to the ethnic and racial identities.
